Click Here to Learn More So the breast cancer weight loss trial is a phase three trial that was designed to look at the impact of a telephone based weight loss program focused on changes in diet and exercise on cancer recurrence and mortality in women who are diagnosed with breast cancer and who have overweight or obesity. The study randomized 3100 and 80 women to a telephone based weight loss program or to usual breast cancer care with health education. We found that our weight loss intervention was highly successful in helping patients to lose weight. Women that were randomized to the weight loss program lost 4.8% of their baseline body weight versus a 0.9% increase in body weight in women who were randomized to the usual care arm. This was highly significant. And the other thing that we found was that the weight loss intervention was successful in helping women to lose weight, whether they were younger or older, regardless of their race or ethnicity, regardless of the kind of cancer, they had their socioeconomic status or their level of education. The breast cancer weight loss trial will continue to follow patients who are enrolled in the study over the next years to determine whether the weight loss intervention led to improvements in disease free survival. Looking at recurrence cancer related mortality and second breast and other cancers, we hope that this study ultimately shows that healthy lifestyle change after cancer diagnosis has a positive impact on outcomes. So that this will be something that we routinely are able to offer our patients as part of their breast cancer care.
